breakfast. it’s my favourite meal of the day. for one, you can have chocolate with it (chocolate pancakes, chocolate oatmeal, hot chocolate, pain au chocolat, chocolate chip muffins) and it’s still legit. i mean, how is that not a win? for another, there are SO many things you can do with breakfast–you can go sweet or you can go savory, not that you strictly can’t do that for other meals but breakfast is more qualified for the either-or situation, do you get me? personally, i almost always–scratch that, i ALWAYS go sweet. why pass up the chance after all? 😉
thing is, breakfast isn’t always that popular with most people. ringing alarm clocks, fresh horror at the time reading on the dial, hurried arms and legs everywhere, out of the door without having anything first and running for your bus flapping your arms. does that sound familiar? or waking up blearily to find the clock has chimed 12. damn! it’s afternoon, how to have breakfast now? perhaps you thump lethargically into your kitchen in the morning, sleep still misting your lids and throat dry as sawdust, pass the idea of toast because your limbs are lead and just dump some milk into a bowlful of cereal because AIN’T NO ONE GOT TIME FODAT. do all these ring a bell? are you clutching your computer keyboards/laptop nodding with tears filling your eyes because you think you have a doomed, (proper) breakfast-less future?
(okay i will tone down the melodrama. i promise. conscious effort!)
well FRET NOT, even if you aren’t in the same pickle as above and are just looking for another form of breakfast to have–because this is a perfect breakfast. endlessly versatile from the original version (i will refrain from calling this BASIC, because that is an insult to this chilly jar of heaven. although yes, very grudgingly yes, this is the /purest/ form of the dish), takes only 10 minutes tops to throw together the night before, ready to eat the moment you wake up, and comes in a handy-dandy portable vehicle too so you can grab it on the go! i mean, what more could you want? practically effort and time free, customisable, and a healthy, nourishing breakfast that gets yo vitamin C and protein in too.
Bircher muesli. i mean come on, if you’re really really strapped of time and utensils you just need to shake everything together in a jar. it’s heavenly, chilly, gorgeously rich and creamy perfection. you can make it chocolate (wink wink nudge nudge) by adding cocoa powder and perhaps some chopped chocolate if you are ever so inclined (when are you not inclined anyway?). you can toss in some berries too so you get a fruity burst while running out of the door, late again. you can add nuts and seeds and all the type…it’s your call, really. either way, you get a super quick, super amazing breakfast.
so, all frequent over sleepers and lazy breakfasters and those who are not! (basically everyone, that is.) here is your next favourite breakfast–do try it out and tell me how it is!
-1/2 cup oats
-sprinkle cinnamon, or any spices you may want
-1/2 a banana, mashed (or any fruit puree–you can even use pumpkin)
-1/2 an apple or pear, grated finely
-1/4 heaping cup greek yogurt/coconut cream if you are vegan or dairy free
-1/4 cup orange juice (or whatever juice you want)
-1/4 cup milk of choice
dried fruit/seeds/nuts/berries if you wish–sunflower+pumpkin seeds and flaked almond is particularly amazing
And that’s it! Shake in a jar to combine/mix in a bowl and cover with clingwrap and leave overnight in the fridge. In the morning, grab it and a spoon and you’re good to go!
